Why is hot stamping used more and more in automobiles?

In fact, many people will knock on the car when buying it to feel the thickness of the metal. But in reality, the thickness of the metal is not closely related to safety. The main factor is the car's frame, which is the primary factor affecting the car's passive safety. Hot stamping is an important measure to increase vehicle safety and can also reduce weight, so its application in automobiles is becoming more and more common!

The main factor is the car's body structure, which is the primary factor affecting the passive safety of the vehicle. Why is hot stamping such an important measure to enhance vehicle safety?

Because hot stamped parts have a higher strength of about 1500 MPa, while cold stamped parts generally reach a maximum of only 1100 MPa, which is quite significant. Moreover, under these conditions, it cannot be shaped into complex forms, as high strength can only accommodate very simple deformations.

The hot stamping process involves first heating the sheet to about 900 degrees Celsius, maintaining it for about 200 seconds, then transferring it to the mold (where a hydraulic press completes the deformation) for pressure maintenance, while the mold has water channels for rapid cooling and annealing. At this point, the austenite inside the part transforms into martensite (students interested can refer to the content shared by Lao Wang earlier to understand the overall picture of automotive steel materials!), similar to our usual forging process, undergoing water quenching to form an ultra-high strength steel.

Before 2018, hot stamping had not developed much in China, but it rapidly developed after 2014. Since then, the use of hot stamped parts in domestic automobiles has increased significantly. Previously, only some high-end cars like Audi Q5 and Volvo XC90 could use hot stamped parts to exceed 30% of the white body weight. Now, most new energy vehicles can achieve over 30%, and many cars that have less than 30% hot stamping are embarrassed to say that their cars have passive safety!
